Hot spring

Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi

A single glance—hot springs flow eastward, yet soaking in mud and watering grass yields no warmth.

For what reason does the warm water of Mount Li flow into golden pavilions and jade-lined pools?

Hot spring

Song Dynasty · Su Shi

Shilong has a mouth without roots; the Longkou hot springs spontaneously gush forth and swallow.

If one believes that all sentient beings are inherently free from defilement, then where could one find the cold or warmth of this spring?

Ode to Yunshan Hot Springs

Song Dynasty · Wang Anshi

The cold spring’s clear sound lingers endlessly, yet this one alone boils like burning fire.

There is no winter or summer in the single qi; all yang energies naturally rise and fall.

People swimming don't cling to fire; even insects emerging seem to doubt the ice.

I recall even more vividly, beneath Mount Li, the crisp sound of snow blanketing the ridges.

Sending Off the Gods with Rain-Relief Music

Song Dynasty · Li Chang

The furious wind stirs up dust, and the scorching sun threatens to melt stone.

When the springs run dry, the earth cracks open; when the fine crops wither, who will till and weed them?

The divine dragon dwells in the mystical ravine, drawing from the clear waves and tranquil pools.

The drums of the toad resound, summoning the divine spirits; may the humble ones below look down and witness the abundant auspicious aura.

Riverside Song

Song Dynasty, Li Ankang (female)

The frail rose droops under the rain, while the affectionate butterfly flits among the flowers.

The flowing water carries the fragrance of milk-white swallows; at Nanpu, my soul is consumed, yet spring pays no heed.

Dongyang’s clothes seem lighter, and the fairy knows; tonight, the moon lingers softly by the small pavilion.

Note: Li Ankang was the elder sister of Li Chang and the mother of Huang Tingjian and Huang Daling. She was bestowed the title of Lady of Ankang County. Li Ankang’s real name is unknown; she came to be known as “Ankang” because of her title as Lady of Ankang County. She was a woman of great literary talent and profound erudition.
