The Legend of Longtan

2020-11-12

The Longtan is located on the right side, about one kilometer from the entrance of Xiacheng Village. The water in the pool is emerald green and 4 meters deep. Today, it has been filled in and transformed into a rafting course as part of the Jiangjunxia Scenic Area. On the hilltop to the left, there are two massive boulders: one closely resembles a dragon’s head, and directly in front of the dragon’s head lies another boulder that looks just like a dragon’s pearl. Together with the ridge across the way, they create a breathtaking scene known as “Two Dragons Embracing the Pearl.”

It is said that on Mount Emei in Sichuan, a green dragon and a yellow dragon were deeply in love. The white dragon, consumed by jealousy, sought to compete with the green dragon for his beloved mate. They engaged in a fierce battle high in the sky, causing the heavens to grow dark and the celestial palace to tremble. Upon hearing this, the Jade Emperor urgently dispatched the Thunder God to subdue them. After receiving the order, the Thunder God flew near Monkey Rock and hurled down a bolt of heavenly thunder. Just as the two dragons were locked in an intense struggle, a tremendous explosion echoed through the mountains, leaving behind a massive pit in the ravine. Later, rainwater filled this pit, and the locals came to call it “Dragon Pool.” The white and green dragons, who perished here, transformed into two towering mountains, standing guard at the entrance to the Lower Cave and safeguarding the peace of the region.
